Mediclinic Pietersmartizburg

Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg is proud to announce the expansion of its well-utilised dialysis unit now offering a nocturnal dialysis service as of May 2024, where patients can receive dialysis while they sleep within the unit.

Nocturnal dialysis is a slower, gentler, more gradual haemodialysis therapy that allows for the required ultrafiltration (removal of fluid) and removal of toxins to take place effectively over a period of 5 – 8 hours ensuring a more stable therapy, with greater control of the patient’s blood pressure during the process. Ultimately this means improved clinical outcomes and quality of life for patients.

“We are proud of this expansion which forms part of Mediclinic’s ongoing focus on growing related healthcare services to ensure accessibility for patients who may require long-term support for various chronic conditions. Mediclinic currently offers 11 renal services units with a footprint across Southern Africa, offering a mix of acute only or both acute and chronic services to our clients,” explains Michelle Dennis, Renal Operations Manager for Mediclinic Renal Services.

Clients diagnosed with end-stage renal disease, cardiac patients who require a more gradual therapy, and clients with a busier lifestyle are ideal candidates for nocturnal dialysis.

“Patients who chose nocturnal dialysis have reported a better quality of life. They now have more time for work, attend school, take care of their children, and enjoy social events during the day because they are not spending their daytime hours on dialysis. In addition to the psychological benefits, physical improvements are also noted. Clients have shared that they feel less tired after therapy, have a new “zest for life” and experience an increase in appetite as well,” explains Dr Mitesh Singh, nephrologist at Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg.

Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg Renal Services is at the forefront of clinical and technological advances. It is also the pilot unit for Nephroflow, our electronic database that allows the nephrologist real-time access to treatments performed in the chronic unit.
