Over recent weeks, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has risen dramatically. Each day, more and more people are testing positive.
Presently, there are 276 242 confirmed cases in South Africa, alongside 134 874 recoveries, while the current COVID-19 related deaths stands at 4079. As the number of cases rise, misinformation is proving to be a serious issue and creating further fear.
Currently, a message is circulating via social media. It states that doctors from Mediclinic have been instructed to not perform CPR on COVID-19 patients.
This is, however, not the case at all.
Dr Stefan Smuts, Chief Clinical Officer of Mediclinic Southern Africa, explains the message is factually incorrect.
“Mediclinic would like to note that the claims referencing Mediclinic Morningside in this message are false,” states Dr Smuts.
Furthermore, Dr Smuts explains that in strict accordance with NICD and National Department of Health protocols, Mediclinic has implemented the necessary measures to manage any patients presenting with symptoms. It has also taken the necessary steps to prevent the potential transmission of the virus in its respective facilities.
“Our priority remains the safety of patients, staff and doctors and as always, decisions about hospitalisation and treatment will be made by the treating doctor based on a patient’s condition,” says Dr Smuts.
As the COVID-19 pandemic poses a serious challenge, Mediclinic is committed to support the National Department of Health where required.
“Everyone in the healthcare chain needs to play their part to prevent further transmission and aid in the best care of those infected and in need of care,” Dr Smuts explains.
Mediclinic Southern Africa advice to people exposed to COVID-19 is self-monitoring and self-isolation with testing warranted if symptoms develop.
