Emergency Centre
The 24-hr emergency centre is constantly manned by experienced medical doctors and registered nurses. We make use of the international triage system and each patient will be triaged and seen by the doctor accordingly. The unit endeavours to incorporate the patient's general practitioner in the further treatment of the patient.
Neonatal Intensive/ Highcare Unit
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is the only private facility in the Northern Free State and has established itself as a leader in giving premature babies a chance in life. Highly specialised and dedicated medical specialists and nursing personnel play an essential role in the treatment and care of the babies within this unit. The unit is comprised of highcare, intensive care beds, and special isolation units, and is equipped with the latest medical technological equipment in order to care for the infants. Mediclinic Welkom's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has no lower weight limit - the smallest baby born here weighed a mere 550g at birth.
The unit promotes and utilises "kangaroo nurturing", in which the mother holds her baby under her clothes and close to her body, in order to promote parent-child bonding. The unit is also situated in the obstetrics unit allowing postnatal mothers who are still hospitalised to be close to their babies.
