The latest additions scheduled to be complete by the end of 2024 include a dedicated day clinic, bigger renal services unit, as well as a fertility clinic catering for families in the community.

“We are expanding access to affordable care for our community. We believe that by offering different care points we are making it easier for our patients to access quality care at the most appropriate point along the continuum of care,” explains Tabitha Lolliot Mediclinic Southern Africa Operations Executive: Central Region.

The demand for all these services from the community has pushed us to grow capacity in many of the services we are currently offering. The renal unit will be the biggest unit across Mediclinic Southern Africa’s renal offering with 20 beds, and offers a range of services including haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, as well as flexible solutions such as nocturnal dialysis to best cater for the broad range of chronic clients we support as well as a complete range of acute services within the main hospital.

Concentrating only on minor surgical procedures, the Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg Day Clinic will be particularly streamlined, efficient as well as cost-effective, without compromising on the high clinical standards of the main hospital.

The specialised fertility clinic, led by Dr Kasturi Moodley, was opened at Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg in 2021. The relocation of the fertility clinic, will now be offering a greater range of services. The services available in the fertility clinic include IUI, IVF, ICSI, egg and sperm freezing as well as support for couples seeking information about fertility.

According to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg Hospital General Manager Meshach Naidu, “Most of our doctors will also be operating from the day clinic, and by moving the less acute procedures to the day clinic we can open up additional capacity in our theatres in the main hospital.” Once completed, Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg Day clinic will offer three fully equipped theatres with specialised staff catering to non-acute procedures as well as one procedure or scope room.

Day case surgery refers to patients undergoing planned, non-emergency surgical procedures that are admitted and discharged on the day of surgery. Examples of typical day surgery include ear, nose and throat surgery such as a tonsillectomy as well as facial and oral surgery, such as wisdom tooth extraction and dermatological procedures. Further examples of possible day procedures include general surgery, orthopaedic, ophthalmology, gynaecological cases and urology.

The flow of the day clinic is enhanced by the new cubicle design, which offers patients ample time for recovery in privacy, before they are safely discharged. The day clinic concept satisfies the patient’s need for a convenient, efficient and quality clinical care. The facilities are expected to open in January 2025 and Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg looks forward to expanding the support we can provide within the community, says Reshnee Beekrum, Patient Experience Manager.
