A legacy of changed lives

For Dr Steve Steyn, an ophthalmologist based at Mediclinic Welkom and Mediclinic Stellenbosch, the opportunity to change lives was manifested in performing free cataract surgeries. In Welkom, 20 elderly patients all received the gift of improved sight in one morning. Dr Steyn diligently worked to restore the patients' sight, where it had previously been compromised by the presence of a cataract.

The gift of sight

In a first for the hospital, Mediclinic Stellenbosch Day Clinic collaborated with the Western Cape Department of Health and Paarl Hospital to provide pro bono cataract surgery for 22 patients currently on the public hospital’s waiting list. “My skills are being used to restore others’ quality of life and open opportunities that were closed due to their weakened eyesight. I see the impact on my patients almost immediately," says Dr Steve Steyn.
