Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg is proud to officially launch its day clinic, focusing on same day surgery and streamlined care for the community. Concentrating only on minor surgical procedures, the conveniently situated day clinic offers cost-effective and accessible quality healthcare, without compromising on the high clinical standards of the co-located main hospital.

“The opening of the Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg Day Clinic is a symbol of our commitment to meeting the growing demand for quality healthcare services in the region. The recent upgrades, now with different care points such as day clinics, renal care and other supporting services within easy reach of our community, ensures that our clients receive the same quality care and expertise they are accustomed to from Mediclinic.” explains Greg van Wyk, Mediclinic Southern Africa CEO.

According to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg Hospital General Manager, Meshach Naidu, “The majority of our doctors will also be operating from the day clinic, and by moving the less acute procedures to the day clinic, we can open up additional capacity in our theatres in the main hospital.” Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg Day Clinic offers three fully equipped theatres with specialised staff catering to non-acute procedures and one procedure or scope room. The new cubicle design enhances the day clinic flow, which offers patients ample time to recover in privacy before they are safely discharged.

“We truly believe that this day clinic will provide the Midlands community with broader access to safe, streamlined private medical care,” continues Naidu. “Day case surgery refers to patients undergoing planned, non-emergency surgical procedures that are admitted and discharged on the day of surgery such as ear, nose and throat surgery like tonsillectomies or grommets as well as facial and oral surgery, such as wisdom tooth extraction and scopes.” Further examples of possible day procedures include general surgery, dentistry, maxillofacial, orthopaedic-, ophthalmology and gynaecological cases.

Naidu explains that the day clinic's services are based on the public's needs. “Our unrelenting focus on patient care will continue within this day clinic, where patients will receive the same quality care and expertise they are accustomed to from Mediclinic. Doctors will, for instance, still be involved in thorough pre-operative assessments to eliminate risks and complications for the patients during and after medical procedures,” he assures.

“As simple, speedy and easy access will be the order of the day, patients will have the added advantage of knowing their exact date and time of admission, as well as expected theatre and discharge times. The client experiences little or no waiting periods before and after surgery because everything will be carefully pre-arranged. Coupled with the fact that services are offered in a friendly, non-threatening environment with well-trained staff, it can only ease the patient’s stress levels while focusing on recovery,” he explains.
