As part of our commitment to your well-being, we offer innovative solutions such as nocturnal dialysis to enhance your quality of life.
What is nocturnal haemodialysis?
Nocturnal dialysis is a specialized form of haemodialysis that occurs at night while you sleep in a renal unit. It is similar to daytime dialysis, offers additional health benefits, and is a gentler treatment.
Treatment duration
Unlike standard daytime sessions, nocturnal dialysis involves a slower and longer treatment process lasting for six to eight hours, done three or more times per week.
Procedure
During nocturnal dialysis, a dialysis machine filters waste products and excess fluid from your blood. Our dedicated nocturnal program in the dialysis center provides expert care and monitoring throughout the night.
Advantages of nocturnal dialysis
Gentler treatment: Extended duration improves waste and fluid removal, promoting overall well-being.
Improved blood tests: Cleaner blood leads to potentially better blood test results and improved metabolic balance.
Reduced blood pressure drops and cramping: Minimises the risk of sudden drops in blood pressure and muscle cramps while on dialysis.
Reduction in medication: Longer dialysis sessions may decrease blood pressure medication and phosphate binder doses over time.
Daytime freedom: Dialysing at night frees up your daytime hours for work, family and activities.
Better appetite: Many patients experience improved appetite and overall vitality.
Less strict diet: Nocturnal dialysis patients enjoy fewer dietary restrictions, enhancing mealtime enjoyment.
Challenges to nocturnal dialysis
Sleep challenges: Some patients may experience difficulty sleeping during dialysis sessions.
Availability: Nocturnal dialysis programmes may not be accessible in all areas.
Fluid management: Close monitoring is required to prevent fluid gain and maintain safety margins.
Impact on quality of life: Balancing nocturnal dialysis with daily responsibilities may pose challenges for some patients. Discuss your concerns with your nephrologist to determine if the treatment is proper.
Managing sleep challenges
We understand that adjusting to nocturnal dialysis can be challenging. Here are some strategies to promote better sleep:
- Maintain a consistent sleep schedule.
- Create a comfortable sleep environment.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing.
- Discuss medication options with your healthcare provider.
- Practise relaxation techniques before bedtime.
