You should wash your breasts with water and soap daily and make sure you dry them properly. Always wash your hands before feeding your baby and wash and dry your breast afterwards. If you wish, you can use clean surgical gauze or cotton to protect your breasts until the next feed.
In the first weeks of lactation, the breasts might become hard and red and tiny, painful cracks may appear. Do not interrupt breastfeeding, but see your doctor as soon as possible. If you have doubts about your health or how to feed your baby ask your doctor or baby clinic staff for advice.
